The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 has been updated with water-repellent fibres in the upper mesh to reduce wet weight, whereas the ASICS Trabuco Max 4 is less resistant to water absorption. The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 is lighter than its predecessor by approximately 13 grams according to ASICS, helping ward off fatigue during long trail runs.
The ASICS Trabuco 14 is for trail runners seeking a formula for protection and responsiveness, whereas the ASICS Trabuco Max 5 provides a thicker slab of cushioning underfoot and Guidesole technology for a super soft, smooth ride. The outer grip on the sole is hard and very noisy on flat surfaces. It also seems to negate the feel of the cushioning making the run feel psychologically more laboured. I think on technical trails it may feel better. I went for this shoe because I loved an old version of the trabucco max which had a different grip pattern. Based on what I have found I would go a road shoe next time.

The ASICS TRABUCO MAX 5 is designed specifically for trail running, with ASICSGRIP providing reliable traction and FF BLAST PLUS foam delivering a cushioned, responsive and energetic ride. It’s a great option for trails and moderately technical terrain. If you’re mainly running on flat pavements or roads, we’d recommend choosing a dedicated road-running shoe, as it will be better suited to those surfaces and provide a smoother, more efficient ride.

They (ASICS) say the Trabuco Max 5 is a "max cushion trail shoe". I say it's much more than that. Yes it is very capable off road & in the wet (slight material & styling improvement from the previous model make it less susceptible to getting wet socks). However these shoes are also great for road easy runs/ parkruns right up to marathons on road. Truely an all round performance I am yet to see in any other ASICS model or any brand for that matter. I've put 255km on this particular pair & they still feel brand new in fit & traction. My previous model (Max 4's) were retired at 1005km! I highly recommend this shoe to anyone & will likely pick up another pair myself...
