If Altra's Solstice XT spent its offseason in the gym, the result would be the Solstice XT 2. This fitness-focused cross-training shoe can handle any functional fitness workout, from the weight racks to box jumps, short road runs and more.

What's new:

Firmer caged upper - engineered mesh provides lightweight, breathable comfort, while a liquid rubber cage increases durability around the heel and midfoot, and toe reinforcements enhance toe protection.
InnerFlex grooves - grid-like midsole grooves designed to enhance foot flex for natural movement.

The Solstice XT 2 features:

FootShape toe box - encourages natural foot positioning and toe splay, while addressing the biological differences between men's and women's feet
Balanced zero drop platform - this 23mm high-abrasion EVA foam cushioning places your heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground to encourage proper alignment, better form and low impact landings throughout your run
FootPod outsole - maps the bones and tendons of your feet to provide a natural, easy flex, unlike the predetermined flex in other shoes that forces your feet to move the way the shoe does.

Great gym shoes - foot shaped & zero drop

I've been a fan of Altra shoes since the first Lone Peak years ago (although they lost the plot a bit for a couple of years). While I mostly buy trail running shoes, I wanted something for the gym and these fit the bill. Very comfortable, and the wide toe box is much better than narrow running shoes for things like leg press, calf raises and anything else where your feet are on the ground (like lifting). Very happy with these.
