While the integrated ESS rock guard adds localised armor to high-impact zones, reviewers note that the Mesa Summit is optimised primarily for easy to medium trails. On sharp, heavily technical mountain scree, the thin 12mm total stack height may still transfer a bit too much sharp trail pressure for some runners.

If you have high-volume or thick feet, removing the 3.5mm insole creates necessary vertical space inside the shoe. If you have lower-volume or flat feet, leaving the insole in is highly recommended to prevent your foot from shifting or sliding on steep downhills.
