Sea to Summit’s story began in Perth in the early 1980s when 17-year-old Roland Tyson started designing and handcrafting his own outdoor equipment on a vintage sewing machine. Driven by his passion for wild exploration, Roland soon attracted attention from fellow Australian adventurers who needed reliable, lightweight and durable gear.

The brand’s official launch came in 1991 when Roland partnered with renowned Australian mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape - one of the first Australians to conquer Mount Everest. Tim was passionate to pursue his next Mount Everest climb in an invigorating new way - from sea level to summit. This feat would demand ultralight, high-performance camping and climbing equipment capable of enduring rapidly changing altitudes and climates. He turned to Roland to help design this expedition's gear, and from that collaboration, Sea to Summit - both the name and the company - was born.

Over the years, Sea To Summit has grown into a globally respected hiking, camping and mountaineering gear specialist, trusted by climbers, trekkers, sailors, bikers and outdoor adventurers. In 1993, adventurer Penny Sanderson joined Sea To Summit, bringing her enthusiasm for outdoor exploration and helping shape the company’s field-testing ethos. Together, Roland and Penny tested products in real-world, often extreme, environments. Roland’s travels - from the arid expanse of the Australian outback to the icy Himalayas - ensured every piece of Sea To Summit gear could meet the needs of adventurers tackling the most unforgiving terrains.
