The ASICS Metafuji Trail 2 is a high-performance trail running shoe engineered specifically for competitive athletes looking to maximise speed and efficiency on runnable, off-road terrain. Designed for a neutral gait, this model introduces a lower stack height and a 5mm drop compared to its predecessor to deliver enhanced control, ground connection, and stability on uneven paths.

The redesigned upper features the new MotionWrap upper for a lightweight, adaptive hold, paired with a new ankle collar construction to ensure foot lockdown and prevent trail debris from entering. For effortless adjustments on the move, it includes a speed lace system that tucks neatly into a dedicated lace pocket.

Underfoot, the midsole combines new FF Leap super-foam with FF Blast Plus cushioning to produce an incredibly bouncy, energy-returning ride without sacrificing comfort. Integrated within the midsole is a new x-shaped full-length carbon plate (30% carbon composition) that maintains explosive forward drive while allowing independent foot flexing over varied surfaces.

To round out its race-ready design, the ASICSGRIP outsole is equipped with 3.5mm multidirectional lugs—featuring uphill-oriented lugs on the medial forefoot and downhill lugs on the lateral forefoot and rearfoot—delivering optimal traction during fast climbs and controlled descents.

With 3.5mm lugs, the Metafuji Trail 2 excels on runnable hard-packed paths, gravel, and rolling single-tracks. However, reviewers note that due to the high stack and moderate lug depth, it requires a careful, active foot placement on deeply technical or muddy alpine descents.

The ASICS Metafuji Trail 2 shoe utilises a sock-like bootie construction (ASICS MotionWrap) designed to keep dust and small rocks out. It offers a snug, secure lockdown through a speed-lacing toggle system with an integrated lace pocket, though the higher ankle collar requires a bit of effort to slip on.
